2011 has been another particularly good year for the Junior section at Henleaze.
The Monday Night Junior Club evenings were particularly well attended again this year, with four courts in use nearly every evening from April to late September. This was the 14th season of the Monday evening Junior Club and this year we were lucky enough to have Anna Torkington assisting and sometimes playing with the youngsters. She was particularly active in reintroducing the Singles Ladder competition which proved to be very popular. In addition all results for every player from May until the the end of July were recorded and a small prize was presented to the members with the most games won in singles and doubles matches.
Every year a junior tournament is held and this was the fifth year that the Don Harris Cup (and the Super Junior Shield for younger members) has been played for. This year’s competition was held on Saturday 24th September and 18 juniors took part. Also within this competition was the ’mystery prize’. This is a prize using pre-determined rules that are not revealed until the end of the tournament. This means that someone could still win the mystery prize even if they had a bad round. Don Harris was again able to attend the club on the day of the tournament to watch some of the events and to present the prizes.
This year Henleaze re-entered the Junior League at 14 and under level. Due to the restrictions of the league rules this was the only category for which we could enter a team. Somewhat disappointingly there were only 3 matches as we were in a division of only 4 clubs including Bristol, Lansdowne and Bishop Sutton. All three matches had great individual performances but overall we lost to Lansdowne and Bristol but won against Bishop Sutton.
Alex Alden played Senior Ladies League for us again last summer and will again be playing Senior Winter League this winter. She also played in the summer Mixed League and her partnership with Cameron Brown was undeafeated. We have 6 junior boys who have been playing in the Senior Men's Summer League and who will be also playing in the Winter League.
