During the spring the club received a letter from the Marie Curie Trust asking clubs to hold ’Anyone for Tennis’ days and suggesting ways to fund raise through tennis.
Henleaze embraced this challenge with enthusiasm and decided to hold a Mixed Doubles Tournament on Tuesday 6th July. What an excellent choice of date! Wonderful weather!
Organisers - Heather Forrest and Alison Price
12 pairs entered the tournament and played 6 matches each. Players came from a variety of clubs, from David Lloyd Westbury, Thornbury. Knowle, Bristol, Clevedon, Woodlands and of course Henleaze. the competition was close and there were some very long tie break sets. The eventual winners of the day were Cameron Brown and Josephine Mitchell who over came Mary Walkerdine and Adrian Somerfield in a close match.

Winners - Cameron and Josephine Runners Up - Mary and Adrian
The food was prepared by members of Henleaze and received a lot of praise so a big thank you to all who contributed. During the day every player contributed to the smooth running of the event, helping with the washing up and the catering side as well as sorting who needed to go on court next.

Box Winners - Caroline and Steve Box Winner - Ray Body
The entry fee for the day was £12 per head and with the courts being free, much of the catering provided free of charge and the prizes donated kindly by Philip Price and Mike Forrest we were able to send a chque for £260 to Marie Curie. This was £250 profit from the day and a £10 donation.
With no hidden costs (raffle etc) to the entrants everyone was very pleased with the value that had been had from an excellent day of competition with equally excellent refreshments. What a fab way of raising money!
Shall we do it again next year? I’m up for it!
Heather Forrest
