Now an annual event, eagerly awaited and, as I discovered when I set the starting time at 11am, with a strong group of supporters who all know that it really ought to start at 10am (!) this tournament took place on Sunday 21st December.

There were 19 entrants although one of these only lasted until the soup at lunchtime. I do not blame the soup which was delicious and fortifying, thank you Jo.
I usually try to throw in a novelty aspect to this seasonal tournament …just a little extra to test the levels of good will! This year there was a ‘joker’ that could be played on the match of your choice. The joker meant double points but would be redundant if you served a double fault in that match. This caught out a number of players!
Peter Veal made a stunning start to the tournament playing his joker on the first round and leading with a massive 14 points. He continued to win and stayed in the lead until the last match when Dave Cierocki played his joker and won overall. Alison Price was the winning lady and Peter Veal and Sally Spencer took the runner up prizes. One double fault stood between Peter K and a prize – clearly the pressure of this event is greater than that of the club tournament!
The mulled wine, mince pies and Christmas cake were excellent and a very good way to end the day. Thank you Sue, Pat and Basia.
And next year? The theme for next year will be pantomime – so start getting your costumes ready! The starting time? Wait and see! The novelty? Not telling.

Many thanks to Heather for organising us such an enjoyable day - getting out of her sick bed to do so.
